Drawings and photographic materials, Choi Hung Estate (1959–1964), Clear Water Bay Road, Wong Tai Sin, Hong Kong 香港黃大仙清水灣道彩虹邨(1959至1964年)繪圖及影像資料
This series consists of 226 drawings, two photographs, a negative, eleven transparencies, and sixteen slides for Choi Hung Housing Estate project. The estate is located at Clear Water Bay Road. It was completed between 1962 and 1964 and won the first Annual Awards of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects a year after completion. The architects Ian J. Campbell and Dick N. Pang were in charge of the public housing project. Highlights of the estate include the planning for high-density estates as neighbourhood units, high efficiency in land use and construction economy, and reduction in the perception of over-crowdedness.
Choi Hung Estate was built by the Housing Authority in response to the tremendous influx of refugees from post-1949 mainland China. The estate has eight high blocks (twenty-storey) and three low blocks (seven-storey). It was built with self-contained flats at the time when residents of other resettlement estates shared bathrooms and kitchens at designated communal areas. To create a strong sense of community, play areas were designed as the public space for every floor above the seventh in the high blocks. The presence of secondary and primary schools, post office, and stores shaped the estate to be a self-sufficient community.
Palmer & Turner project number: 123.
