Drawings and photographic materials, AIA Building (1965–1969), Stubbs Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong 香港灣仔司徒拔道友邦大廈(1965至1969年)繪圖及影像資料
This series consists of 345 drawings, twenty-six transparencies, and a slide for AIA Building project. It was located at Stubbs Road and constructed in 1969, later demolished in 2019. The commercial building, designed by James Hajime Kinoshita, was awarded Hong Kong Institute of Architects Silver Medal in 1969.
The twenty-seven storey AIA Building is the first skyscraper in Hong Kong using pre-stressed structure. All columns were moved to the exterior wall to create column-less spaces. This resulted in the repeated pattern on the outer thick wall. The entrance canopy supported by hyperbolic paraboloid cantilever made the building not too monotonous. Documents on a proposed substation at the basement is included in this series.
Palmer & Turner project number: 189.
