Drawings and photographic material, Clague Garden Estate (1985–1988), Hoi Shing Road, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong 香港荃灣海盛路祈德尊新邨(1985至1988年)繪圖及影像資料
This series consists of 482 drawings and a photograph of Clague Garden Estate project. The estate, located at Hoi Shing Road in Tsuen Wan, started construction in 1986 and completed in 1989. It was the first estate to be under the ‘Flat-for-Sale Scheme’ by Hong Kong Housing Society. The project was designed by James Hajime Kinoshita and awarded the Certificate of Merit in 1991 Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Awards.
The estate comprises three high-rise residential blocks, one low-rise residential block for elderly, a commercial complex, a kindergarten and nursery, and a recreational courtyard. One of the features in the high-rise blocks are the lobbies, which are divided into three types on different floors: narrow lobby, wide lobby, and non-lobby. The lift lobbies are distributed on every third floor which means not all floors are accessible by lifts. The difference between lobbies allows the blocks to capture natural light and enhance ventilation. They were also designed to build up connection between residents when gathering in the lift lobbies. The commercial complex is multi-functional so that both shops and service facilities are placed closely to facilitate self-sufficiency.
Palmer & Turner project number: 1610.
