ARKOMJOGJA Project Archives 日惹社區建築師作品項目檔案

This fonds captures the works of ARKOMJOGJA in 2010s. It comprises both their projects in Yogyakarta, Java and Palu-Donggala, Sulawesi, consisting of 1460 items (1442 born-digital photographs and 16 physical drawings).

Indonesia has been a country frequently falling prey to earthquake and tsunami because of its geographical location. Inadequate remedy policies following the natural disasters inflicted further sufferings to the survivors. In the face of this, a group of architects formed ARKOMJOGJA in Yogyakarta in 2007, with an aim to help survivors rebuild their homeland, with an alternative participative approach. This archive contains a large number of photographs that documented the workshops ARKOMJOGJA hosted for the local villagers, where the indigenous inhabitants can engage in the framework of ‘participative mapping and planning. They are guided in the process of surveying, mapping and planning their future villages, with the objective to achieve a collective understanding of their needs and solutions using locally sourced technology and building materials. This is a movement that empowers the local commoners with the tools and autonomous spirit to shape their own dream home, extricating themselves from relying on the authorities and enterprises.

This archive provides a glimpse to workshops taken place at Sidomulyo, Kricak, Ambarukmo, Papringan, Tegaldowo, Laham, and Metal Semanggi around Yogyakarta between 2014–2017. A greater portion of the materials are related to the ‘Post-disaster Community Participative Workshop’ (Workshop Perencanaan Partisipatif Pasca Bencana) held at Tanjung Padang, Tompe, Wani Dua, MamboroInduk, and Mamboro Perikanan around the Palu-Donggala region in 2019. Photographs documentation for each day of the respective workshops and selected drawings by the participating villagers are available to view in this archive. These materials representing the diversity and contemporaneity of design and architectural practices, reflecting on the issues of authorship and architecture as social practice exercised in Southeast Asian country.

This archive was purchased by M+ in 2020. The physical drawings were owned and managed by ARKOMJOGJA until they were shipped to M+ in 2021. The born-digital photographs were transferred to M+ in two batches throughout 2020–2021 via cloud storage.

As for related materials in M+ Collection, a study model and a mock-up built during the Post-disaster Community Participative Workshops can be found: 2020.358, 2020.359.
