About the Programme
M+ Cinema celebrates the legendary band Yellow Magic Orchestra with ‘Y.M.O.S.T.’, a programme of films featuring music by individual members of Y.M.O. Featured are three film scores by three of Japan’s most illustrious musicians. First, Haruomi Hosono finds his groove in Go Takamine’s seminal Okinawan film Paradise View (1985). Then, in in Nobuhiko Obayashi’s April Fish (1986), Yukihiro Takahashi not only plays music but also the leading role. Lastly, Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) features Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first foray into film composing.
WestK will also be paying homage to Y.M.O.’s pioneering sounds with Freespace Ensemble: Yellow Magic Orchestra Reimagined, featuring a group of Hong Kong musicians and artists, who will revisit the Japanese group’s classic tracks in concert.
