Small Talk

In Small Talk (2016), Taiwanese filmmaker Huang Hui-chen embarks on a journey to reconcile with her estranged mother, Anu, a lesbian Taoist priestess. Through candid conversations and intimate revelations, the documentary delves into their complex relationship, marked by years of silence, pain, and unspoken truths. The film meticulously weaves together the personal histories of Huang and Anu through reflective interviews, archival footage, and personal photos, crafting a deeply intimate and moving narrative that captures the essence of familial relationships.

Small Talk intricately explores the multifaceted relationship between family members, shedding light on the communication and silence that is often overlooked in Asian families. By initiating small, everyday conversations, Huang gradually comes to terms with painful histories and finds common ground between mother and daughter. As Huang seeks to understand her mother's past and her struggles with societal norms, the film unfolds as a poignant exploration of identity, acceptance, and the bonds that define family.
