Enter the eccentric and endearing world of Grey Gardens in one of the most remarkable mother-and-daughter portraits captured on film. As relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, mother Mrs. Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (known as Big Edie) and daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (known as Little Edie) are relics of their formerly glamourous lives in high society and have been living together in isolation for decades. Amidst the pest-infested environs of their decaying mansion in East Hampton, New York, Big and Little Edie go about their everyday lives in a bittersweet world of their own enchantment, reminiscence, and interdependence. An important milestone in American direct cinema, this powerful cult classic has inspired countless adaptations, quotable sayings, fashion trends, and rallying cries for embracing our true selves.

About the Directors

Albert Maysles (1926–2015, United States) and David Maysles (1931–1987, United States) are recognized as pioneers of direct cinema, a form of non-fiction filmmaking often characterized by the use of portable technical equipment, synchronous sound, and the desire to capture reality. Some of their most well-known works include Salesman (1968), Gimme Shelter (1970), and Grey Gardens (1976).

Ellen Hovde (1925–2023, United States) was a pioneering documentary editor and filmmaker known for her work with Albert and David Maysles on films such as Grey Gardens (1976) and Gimme Shelter (1970). As one of the very first members of New York Women in Film & Television, Hovde was also an acclaimed producer for the television miniseries Benjamin Franklin (2002).

Muffie Meyer is a producer, editor, and director. With Ellen Hovde, she co-directed and co-edited Grey Gardens (1976) and co-founded Middlemarch Films, which has produced numerous award-winning films and television series.
