Four Daughters
Four Daughters is a non-fiction film that meticulously weaves interviews with the original family members—mother and two younger daughters—and reenactments with two actresses playing the two elder daughters who are no longer home.
Set in Tunisia, the family opens up on camera about a traumatic event where two elder daughters left home to join the Islamic State in Libya. Through interviews and reenactments with the actresses, the film delves into the upbringing of the four siblings and the challenges of parenthood amid political transformations of the country in the 2010s. The film provides an opportunity for the family to engage in therapeutic conversations with the actresses that play the missing part of the family, examining the relationship between interviewee, camera, and the audience, in addition to the multi-layered storyline.
With her masterful direction, Kaouther Ben Hania crafts a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film, capturing the nuances of familial relationships and the struggles of self-discovery. The performances by the talented cast bring depth and authenticity to the characters, immersing the audience in their joys, sorrows, and triumphs. Four Daughters was nominated for Palme d'Or in Cannes Film Festival 2023 and Best Documentary Feature Film in the Academy Awards 2024.
