The Pervert's Guide to Ideology
The Pervert's Guide to Ideology
A sequel to The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (2006), Slavoj Žižek's The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (2012) continues the lecture-documentary framework of its predecessor but with an emphasis on the theme of ideology. Featuring the familiar format of Žižek transplanting himself into the scenes of various movies, the film retains an infectious zeal.
His analysis—including comparing the manipulation of fear in the film Jaws (1975) to the Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will (1935), equating the heroism of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver (1976) to The Searchers (1956), and claiming that The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) proves Christianity to be a more radical form of atheism—often appears unconventional, but nevertheless is clear in its reasoning.
The screening on 26 October will be followed by a talk with Hong Kong writer and film critic Long Tin, moderated by M+ Curator-at-large of Hong Kong Film and Media Li Cheuk-to.
