Her

Written and directed by Spike Jonze, Her follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely and sensitive forty-something who spends his days writing love letters on behalf of other people at ‘beautifulhandwrittenletters.com’. Caught in the throes of a traumatic divorce, Theodore purchases the first artificially intelligent computer operating system OS-1. Upon loading the programme, he meets Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), the system’s virtual assistant whose sexy, husky voice reveals a caring, playful personality. An intimate relationship quickly develops between them. Winner of the 2014 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, this stylish, unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance and explores our increasingly entangled relationship with technology and the way it isolates and connects us all.

The screening on 4 March will be followed by a post-screening talk in English with Dr Izumi Nakayama and M+ Curator of Moving Image Ulanda Blair.

YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES’ video is a dark, humorous story about a devoted Samsung employee who takes his last breath at the office desk before being reincarnated as a Samsung smartphone. Produced as part of a seven-episode video series for the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, the work gives an unflinching look at Samsung’s fervent corporate ethos and poses related questions on labour and value.
