Minding the Gap
Filmmaker and skateboard enthusiast Bing Liu turns from creating skate videos to an award-winning documentary with Minding the Gap. Through his subjects Zack and Keire—and ultimately himself—Liu explores how teenage skaters find solace in their favourite pastime despite the turmoil they experience at home. This coming-of-age documentary chronicles their joy and pain with stylish skateboarding shots and moving personal stories. Liu imbues his first film with emotional authenticity, resulting in a heartfelt portrait of young men confronting their trauma and finding their way to adulthood.
About the Director
Bing Liu (b. 1988, China) is a Chicago-based filmmaker whose first documentary feature, Minding the Gap, debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The film took home the Special Jury Award. Liu also directed a segment for the documentary series America to Me (2018). In 2021, He co-directed All These Sons, a documentary that examines the issue of gun violence in Chicago.
