Do the Right Thing
Under the blazing summer sun, busted hydrants, blasting boomboxes, and block parties freshen up the sweltering streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) in Brooklyn. Tensions heat up when an Italian American-owned pizzeria in the predominantly African American neighbourhood refuses to include Black celebrities on its ‘Wall of Fame’, and a police killing tips over the simmering pot of frustrations.
Spike Lee’s self-starring masterpiece Do the Right Thing (1989) paints a timeless portrait of Brooklyn that is rich in both piercing social commentary and brash humour. Colourful scenes of Bed-Stuy are elevated by a vibrant soundscape featuring a spectrum of music by African American artists, ranging from high-powered hip hop (Public Enemy’s ‘Fight the Power’ (1989)) to romantic R&B (Perri’s ‘Feel So Good’(1988)) and a jazz score composed by the director’s father Bill Lee that soothes you like the summer breeze.
