Rumours
Leaders of the world’s largest economies gather for the annual G7 to draft a hollow statement on an unspecified global crisis. Germany, the host country, arranges for the summit to be held at a secluded estate, but the attendants soon go missing. A mummified Iron Age corpse is accidentally unearthed, and soon the seven leaders are confronted with a terrifying horde of reanimated bog bodies as they get lost in the foggy woods.
Using the G7 as a backdrop for a jaw-droppingly surreal and hilarious apocalyptic zombie film, the film features a humorous performance from Cate Blanchett as a version of Angela Merkel as well as hints of real-world caricature (Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau, and Joe Biden). Rather than mocking individual politicians, however, Guy Maddin conveys the loss of faith in democratically elected leaders and ‘the free world’.
