Revolution+1
The assassination of Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, shocked the world on 8 July 2022. Firebrand filmmaker Masao Adachi wasted no time and soon began production of Revolution+1, an intimate character study of the culprit who shot Abe with a homemade firearm. Adachi, a former member of the Japanese Red Army, is interested in how a 41-year-old unemployed man has grown to believe that his life has been ruined by the controversial Unification Church, whose strong ties with the ruling Liberal Democrats have led him to his target.
True to his roots in guerrilla filmmaking, Adachi strips the story down to its essence, focusing on a disgruntled citizen who, having hit a dead end, fixated on the scion of a political dynasty as the symbol of all that he believed is wrong in Japanese society. Featuring an affecting score by Yoshihide Otomo, Revolution+1 is one of the most discussed Japanese independent films of recent times.
