On the French Riviera with Man Ray and Picasso & Guernica

On the French Riviera with Man Ray and Picasso

François Lévy-Kuentz | 2021 | 52 min.

In the summer of 1937, Picasso and his Surrealist friends gathered in Cap d’Antibes, south of France, for a beach vacation. This documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the camaraderie and carefree lives of these artists just two years before the onset of World War II, which would ultimately separate them. François Lévy-Kuentz revives these tender moments captured on film by Man Ray along with photographs by Lee Miller and Dora Maar, transforming these archival treasures into a feature-length film.

Guernica

Alain Resnais, Robert Hessens | 1950 | 13 min.

One of Alain Resnais’s most politically engaged films, Guernica blends historical footage and press clippings with works by Pablo Picasso produced between 1904 and 1937 to make a fervent plea against militarism. Resnais’s innovative editing and use of existing imagery convey a sense of dislocation and collapse following the traumatic historical event. This unique cinematic experience also features male and female voice actors performing a monologue written by the French Surrealist poet Paul Éluard.

The screening of Guernica will be preceded by On the French Riviera with Man Ray and Picasso.
