For the third year, M+ and the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will jointly present three special programmes during the 49th HKIFF, including Viet and Nam (2024), the latest film by artist-filmmaker Trương Minh Quý, and the world premiere of a new restoration of Peter Yung’s The System (1979), one of the titles of M+ Restored. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. M+ will also co-present a roundtable discussion on the comparative practices and challenges of restoring Chinese-language cinema, featuring representatives of institutions and laboratories across the region.

As one of the oldest film festivals in Asia, the global reputation of the HKIFF was built on the pioneering work of programming Asian films and its retrospectives when Asian and Hong Kong cinema was not well known to the international community. With a solid reputation for programming, HKIFF has become the model for many subsequent film festivals around the region.
