The Past is Always New, the Future is Always Nostalgic:
Photographer Daido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama, ‘the king of the street snapshot’, is still a working artist at age eighty-three. Effortlessly transcending art, fashion, and design, Moriyama has received numerous awards worldwide, including the 2019 Hasselblad Award, regarded as the ‘Nobel Prize of photography’.
The Past Is Always New, the Future Is Always Nostalgic is an intimate portrait of Moriyama’s creative process and a fascinating journey through his life, work, inspirations, and reception over the past fifty years. The film also narrates the dramatic ‘resurrection’ of Moriyama's 1968 debut photo book, Japan, a Photo Theater. The documentary follows the 2018 reconstruction of the 149-photo masterpiece from A to Z, as Moriyama provides bookbinders and editors with context, technical details, and a critical eye.
