Faces Places

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Faces Places is a heartwarming documentary co-directed by the late filmmaker Agnès Varda and renowned street artist and photographer JR. The film follows their unlikely friendship as they embark on a road trip across rural France, exploring the stories and faces of its people.

Despite their 55-year age gap, Varda and JR are united by their shared passion for photography and their desire to bring art to the masses. Armed with their cameras and a mobile photo-booth in the shape of a van, they set out to capture the essence of the people they encounter along the way. From farmers to factory workers, dockers to waitstaff, they immortalise the faces of ordinary individuals and plaster giant portraits of them on various structures, transforming everyday places into extraordinary art installations.

Through their collaborative journey, Varda and JR not only celebrate the beauty of human connection and individuality but also reflect on the impermanence of life and the power of art to making lasting change. Faces Places is a charming ode to art, humanity, and the unassuming beauty found in the everyday lives of ordinary people.
