Kusama’s Circle:
1980s Tokyo
Bringing together videos of Yayoi Kusama’s live performances in 1983 and 1984, and video works by Mako Idemitsu and Bill Viola, this programme spotlights some of the most prominent artists associated with Tokyo’s Video Gallery SCAN—the first Japanese gallery to specialise in video art. Founded in 1980 by video and new media pioneer Fujiko Nakaya, Video Gallery SCAN advanced the moving image scene in Japan, stimulating a global network through participation in international exhibitions and by connecting young Japanese video artists with prominent international artists.
Complementing Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now, this screening features: Self-Obliteration, Yayoi Kusama Performance by Yoshiomi Yamaguchi & Kiyofumi Motoyama; Infinity Nets, Yayoi Kusama Performance by Itaru Kato; Great Mother (HARUMI) by Mako Idemitsu; and I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like by Bill Viola.
