Hong Kong's suburban neighbourhoods, public housing estates, and hangouts are vital aspects of the city's local identity. In ‘A Different View’, a subchapter of ‘Hong Kong: The Establishing Shot’, these spaces come to life through lesser-told stories about the relationship of Hongkongers with their quotidian environments—offering moments of connection and beauty told in intimate settings.
Suk Suk
Ray Yeung | 2019 | DCP | Chinese & English subtitles | 92 min.
Married for over forty years, Pak (Tai Bo) is a taxi driver with a picture-perfect family. Retiree Hoi (Ben Yuen) has single-handedly raised his son, who is now raising his own family. Restricted by social norms and expectations, Pak and Hoi have suppressed their true feelings for most of their lives. They find themselves in each other's company, realising it may be their last chance to find romance. The pair cruise the streets of Hong Kong in Pak’s taxi looking for a space where they can reveal their true selves. Suk Suk captures the plight of older gay men in scenes that take place across lost urban sites and hidden spaces like public toilets and gay bathhouses.
