Accident & Shorts
Hong Kong action films have propelled the city onto the international cinema stage. ‘Counter/Action’, a subchapter of ‘Hong Kong: The Establishing Shot’, brings audiences a timely opportunity to reassess the importance of this genre for our understanding of the city. The works in this selection range from a generation-defining classic, a barnstorming crime thriller with an infamous backdrop, to one that serves as a deconstruction of the action mise en scène.
Accident
Soi Cheang | 2009 | 89 min. | Chinese & English subtitles | Category IIB
Set within a compact Hong Kong cityscape of dense crowds and heavy traffic, Accident follows a band of assassins led by the Brain (Louis Koo). They skilfully orchestrate a series of 'accidents' to disguise their kills. The city's back alleys, hanging shop signs, and bamboo scaffolds create one claustrophobic space after another. Following an accident involving its very own members, the team’s emotional strain heightens. They adapt to the ever-changing dynamics of the city lurking with danger while searching for clues to whether what happened was really an accident.
