Grand Stair Screenings:
Hong Kong as Mise-en-scène
See Hong Kong as you’ve never seen it before in a series of thought-provoking videos that capture the city’s complexities and different faces.
Commissioned by M+, the Hong Kong as Mise-en-scène videos showcase the creative visions of local artists. Through an experimental and cinematic lens, these films offer a unique exploration of Hong Kong’s diverse landscapes and identities.
Inspired by iconic images of Hong Kong that have appeared in countless films and have imprinted themselves in the minds of millions, we adopted the concept of ‘mise-en-scène’ to leverage the narrative and documentative power of moving images. In film studies, mise-en-scène refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a frame, including everything in front of the camera—the set, props, lights, colours, actors, costumes—and how they relate or interact. To place Hong Kong on a stage allows us to observe the city in the form of a cinematic setting, unfold its intricate textures and sensibilities, and expand its visual identity.
