A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night & Short
Defanging patriarchy, Iranian vampire Western A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night follows the story of a female vampire who stays out late wandering the streets of Bad City to take vengeance on wrongdoers and protect the abused women who live there. After she bites and kills a drug dealer, the vampire encounters a young man Arash, setting off a dramatic chain of events.
‘A vampire is so many things: serial killer, a romantic, a historian, a drug addict—they’re sort of all these things in one’, states director Ana Lily Amirpour, using the film to examine the many parallel facets of a vampire and a young woman—as an antihero vigilante, a friend, and a lover. Shot in California in black and white, the neo-noir vampire horror was nominated for the Best of NEXT Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and has received significant attention.

Menstruation is often considered an intimate subject matter amongst woman, but I’m Late blends female, male, and non-binary voices into a vibrant animation that illustrates the relationship between menstruation and pregnancy through interview-style segments. Inspired by the cycle of pregnancy and birth, Sawako Kabuki invites the protagonist to share her experience, including both the joy of creating a new life and the devastation of miscarriage and infertility.
