Kubo and the Two Strings
Kubo and the Two Strings follows Kubo, a one-eyed boy who plays the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument, in feudal Japan. As he tells stories, magical origami come to life with his music. Kubo lives in a cave to care for his ill mother, though he is also curious about his lost father. On a festive night, Kubo is encouraged to light a lantern to converse with his father’s spirit, but the night brings unexpected visitors. Kubo is chased by his two aunts, who are after his remaining eye. His mother comes to the rescue and sends him to the Far Lands, where he meets Monkey and Beetle. Together, they embark on a quest to search for the magical armour that will help Kubo confront the Moon King.
Produced by Laika, this critically acclaimed stop-motion animation references Japanese art, including ink wash painting and origami. It showcases a seamless blend of puppetry, computer-generated graphics, and 3D printing technology. A brief behind-the-scenes segment in the closing credits reveals that the Giant Skeleton monster is a mechanical puppet nearly five metres tall and weighing 180 kilograms.
