About the Programme
Korean cinema was the cusp of a renaissance when Park Chan-wook made Joint Security Area in 2000. The acclaimed thriller sent shockwaves across Asia, making Park one of his country’s most sought-after filmmakers. But mainstream recognition did not dull Park’s proverbial blade. His next three films, collectively known as the ‘Vengeance Triology’, are twisted tales of violence that established Park as a trendsetter in Korean cinema. After Oldboy (2003), the second film of the trilogy, was awarded the Grand Prix at 2003 Cannes Film Festival, Park has since been a favourite at major film festivals. A former film critic with a vast knowledge of world cinema, Park’s mise-en-scène is meticulous and even mind-boggling at times. Characteristic of Park’s oeuvre, behind every sensational work of entertainment is a romantic inquiry into the frailty of the human heart, as seen in the light comedy I’m a Cyborg, But that’s OK (2006) and the doomed love story Decision to Leave (2022).
