Before, Now & Then
Set in the context of late 1960s civil unrest and violence in Indonesia, this period drama traces the story of a young woman named Nana. Haunted by memories of her lost husband and violent acts of the past, she seeks refuge in a second marriage to a wealthy older man. Nana feels trapped by patriarchal norms and suffers silently, until one day she discovers friendship in an unexpected place. Adapted from the first chapter of the biographical Jais Darga Namaku (My Name is Jais Darga) by Ahda Imran, the film is based on the true story of a woman who lived in West Java during the 1960s. It presents a candid observation of political, domestic and intimacy issues faced by women in rural Indonesian society at the time.
