Hong Kong:
Spotlight on Neco Lo

Neco Lo Che Ying is amongst Hong Kong’s first generation of self-taught independent animators. After winning the Best Animation Award at the Hong Kong Independent Short Film Festival (HKISFF) for four consecutive years, Lo was promoted as a long-term member of its jury. He was influenced by many different styles from around the world, including Japanese anime, Disney cartoons, Brothers Quay and Jan Švankmajer, among others. He also experimented with using a wide variety of media and techniques ranging from traditional cel to clay, salt and sand in his creative expression. Absurdist and dark humour is common in his works, with Night of a Sleepy Writer and The Men Who Shot Snapping Turtles being hailed as instant classics. This world premiere of the first-ever digitally restored versions of Lo’s works features eleven animations, including his early works shot on Super 8 film as well as two short films shot on 16mm and 35mm.

The screening on 9 July will be followed by a post-screening talk with director Neco Lo Che Ying in Cantonese. The talk will be moderated by M+ Curator-at-Large of Hong Kong Film and Media Li Cheuk-to.
