Linda Chiu-han Lai:
10957 Moons and 30 Elliptical Years
Interdisciplinary artist Linda Chiu-han Lai works at the intersection of experimental moving images, the history of everyday life, and media archaeology. Drawing from speculative theories, she prefers an anthropological stance in her investigation of art and cinema, often interrogating narrative construction through historiographic pieces.
10957 Moons and 30 Elliptical Years is an eight-part collage of events, objects, thoughts, and sensations drawn from Lai’s personal moving image archive, assembled between 1991 and 2021. Describing herself as a modern-day ‘flâneuse’, Lai interweaves diaristic video fragments, with found footage from film and television, as well as exhibition and performance documentation.
For Lai, these images are all slices of the world in motion—‘a series of escapes and entrances that bear the traces of change’—so much so that the chapters increasingly grow into introspective fragments that embody the threshold between fluctuating states of being. Occasionally, the work pays tribute to nature and its interlocking, co-evolving systems, all driven by continual feedback and interactions. Both personal and political, this film shifts between a nostalgic meditation on the past and a critical analysis of the present.

The city has always been breathing, following its automatic rhythm. Only when the camera is set up in a particular place in a particular moment would we begin to see drama.
