Marona's Fantastic Tale

A petite dog Marona is hit by a car. Taking her last breath, she looks back at her eventful life through vivid flashbacks. Strolling down memory lane and recalling bittersweet moments, Marona narrates her stories on meetings, partings, and everything in-between with her three former owners. Little by little, Marona’s narrations reveal that she is more than the typical, loyal figure people often perceive. Instead, her surpassing wit and perceptiveness bring audiences enlightening lessons on happiness and unconditional love, universal to both humans and non-humans.

Executed with a range of playfully hand-drawn and collage-like visuals by Brecht Evens, Marona’s Fantastic Tale won Feature Animation Film—Grand Prize at the 2020 Tokyo Anime Award.
